This Senior Structural Engineer, Modeling &Simulation will apply computational and test methods to develop reliable Transport Refrigeration product designs, and to address structural reliability with existing products. Potential focus areas include comprehensive structural design development and validation in structural dynamics, fatigue, and transport vibration. Work closely with various product and technology development teams, and with global engineering support center personnel around the globe.

 

CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (others may be added):

  • Support and carry out the advancement and growth of the Modeling and Simulation Team, as well as the Applied Mechanics, Instrumentation, Sound and Vibration Laboratory. The scope encompasses technology in both computational and test, developing tools and methodologies applicable to Transport Refrigeration products.
  • Familiar with computational models for structural reliability, acoustics and/or fluid flow. The scope includes prediction of stress, vibration, sound radiation and fluid flow characteristics.
  • Plan and conduct various (static and dynamic) Finite Element (FEA) and multi-body dynamic (MBD) analysis for stress and life predictions, in both mechanical and thermal domains.
  • Plan and supervise structural tests to validate simulation models, including but not limited to strain gage, tensile, shaker vibration, and structural dynamic tests.
  • Work closely with product engineers and test technicians. Responsibilities include understanding and prioritizing test requests, designing and proposing the appropriate test, discussing and supervising test implementations, assuring the validity of the data and its interpretation, and documenting the work in formal reports.
  • Act as a member of the various product and technology development teams to design reliable and quiet products.
  • Support and successfully accomplish annual corporate objectives for individuals and teams.
  • Effectively utilize personal project management techniques and utilize the available technical skills and resources necessary for success. Be a strong team player.
  • Work closely and mentor other engineering resources globally.
  • Act as a representative to promote the concepts of structural reliability and how they relate to product designs.


MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 5 years of structural/FEA work experience is required.

- OR –

  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least 3 years of structural/FEA work experience is required.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS or KNOWLEDGE:

  • Formal coursework in structural dynamic, advanced mechanics of materials, structural mechanics, and digital signal processing is required.
  • Experience in performing structural dynamic and durability simulation and test is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in correlating simulations models and test data is required.
  • Experience and knowledge in ANSYS Mechanical, HBM NCode Glyphworks and Design Life, or other comparable tools is required.
  • Experience with structural data acquisition systems, both hardware and software, as well as mechanical strain measurement is required. Prior experience in Siemens Test.Lab is preferred.
  • Experience in Siemens SimCenter 3D, Altair Hypermesh, Optistruct, Nastran, or other comparable tools is preferred.
  • Experience in material models, both metals and non-metals are required.
  • Experience in accelerated life test, for both metals and non-metals, as well as the knowledge to simulate those tests are required.
  • Strong prior experience in matlab and excel is required.
  • Experience in Transport Refrigeration products, engines, fans and compressors are preferred.
  • Strong teamwork, interpersonal, communication, and project management skills are required.
  • Must be able to work on multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated sustained creativity and ability to balance technical work and business priorities.
