Optimization Engineer

Job Summary: 

The Optimization Engineer functions as a core member of the Trane energy engineering team, playing a key role in identification, qualification and quantification of energy conservation measures, utility optimization opportunities, and facility operating savings measures that may be employed as part of a project or service solution. The Optimization Engineer supports the work of Intelligent Services and Energy Services Energy Engineers, Account Engineers, and Account Managers while managing a limited number of their own assigned Intelligent Services and M&V clients. In addition, a key function of the Optimization Engineer is to develop and mentor interns, coops, and/or energy engineers in training ensuring the quality and accuracy of their work. 

Metrics for Success: 

  • Generation of quality analytical reports that are clear and concise 

  • Ability to synthesis otherwise disparate data into actionable insights 

  • Accuracy of data collection, analysis, modeling, and report creation including (but not limited to): 

  • Utility analysis data/benchmarks/load profiling/reports 

  • Facility commissioning data/reports 

  • Financial metrics 

  • Consultation reports 

  • Trane Trace Building Models 

  • Meets deadlines and appropriate timelines to exceed internal and external customer expectations 

  • Become a small number of assigned clients’ trusted advisor and deliver a world class consultation report. Generate significant pull-through business for Trane and continuous operational improvement for the client. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Team with the Trane Engineering Team to perform tasks necessary to develop and deliver consultations, energy conservation projects, and substantial optimization solutions for Trane’s clients 

  • Performs analysis related to assigned opportunities/accounts/projects  

  • Mentors interns, coops, and energy engineers in training 

  • Review work as necessary for quality control and accuracy 

  • Customizes software and spreadsheets to achieve desired technical results & presentations 

  • Provides technical explanation and/or support to teammates 

  • Successful completion of core engineering applications and tools training 

  • Learns and implements new and existing applications and related engineering processes 

  • Keeps up-to-date on new technologies related to modeling, M&V, utilities/rate structures/rebates, Energy Star, commissioning, Trane analysis tools and other industry related practices and applications 

  • Analyze data output for trends and/or any deviations that need further investigating 

  • Perform building “walk-throughs” and identify energy conservation measures and collect data for analysis 

Education and / or Experience: 

  • Associates and/or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology discipline. 

  • CEM and IPMVP certification required, or obtained within the first 12-18 months of eligibility 

  • Ability to clearly communicate and develop relationships with clients and internal team is required  

  • This position requires a broad understanding of Trane’s overall solution deliverables, tools and applications 

  • Knowledge of the Energy/Utility Industry 

  • Experience in effectively understanding and manipulating technical information, and responding to questions from fellow engineers, sales associates and clients 

  • Experience collecting data, analyzing and presenting data in a clear and accurate manor 

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft office products and office equipment required 

  • Successful track record of Experience in reading, analyzing and interpreting general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations
